University of Kentucky Issues Statement on Sexual Assault Allegations Against Former Swim Coach

In recent developments reported by bleacherreport.com., the University of Kentucky finds itself embroiled in a controversy following allegations of sexual assault against former swimming and diving coach Lars Jorgensen. This revelation comes on the heels of investigative reporting by Katie Strang of The Athletic, who uncovered a lawsuit filed by two former members of the Wildcats swimming and diving team.

The lawsuit paints a disturbing picture of Jorgensen’s alleged misconduct during his tenure at the university, implicating the institution in what the plaintiffs describe as a culture of complicity and deliberate indifference. Kristi Willett, a spokeswoman for the University of Kentucky, expressed deep concern over the allegations, stating that the university is “distressed to hear” such troubling accusations.

The athletes’ claims suggest that the university failed to address or take action against Jorgensen’s alleged behavior, enabling him to create a toxic and sexually hostile environment within the swim program. According to the lawsuit, this environment allegedly facilitated instances of sexual harassment, assault, and even violent rape against young female coaches and collegiate athletes under Jorgensen’s supervision.

Willett emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, and staff, affirming that they have “no tolerance for harm, harassment, or abuse.” She further stated that upon learning of the allegations outlined in Strang’s report, the university promptly reached out to the necessary law enforcement authorities to initiate an investigation into the matter.

However, despite Willett’s reassurances, the university’s response has come under scrutiny, particularly regarding its handling of previous reports and allegations against Jorgensen. Kentucky’s athletic director, Mitch Barnhart, refrained from commenting on the matter, citing the ongoing litigation.

Strang’s investigative report sheds light on several instances where concerns about Jorgensen’s conduct were raised, with some even reaching university administrators directly. Mark Howard, an assistant swimming coach at Toledo, reportedly contacted Barnhart and then-Wildcats swim coach Gary Conelly in June 2012, alleging that he had been informed of a sexual relationship between Jorgensen and a swimmer from the Toledo team. Despite these allegations, Conelly proceeded to hire Jorgensen as an associate head coach at Kentucky.

Furthermore, a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by a former Toledo softball coach in October 2014 referenced an alleged “long-term romantic relationship” between Jorgensen and a student-athlete, raising further questions about the university’s awareness and response to such allegations.

The troubling pattern continued in August 2019 when two swim coaches from San Jose State reported allegations against Jorgensen to their Title IX office. San Jose State’s Title IX officer subsequently contacted their counterpart at Kentucky to address the matter.

Jorgensen’s resignation from his position with the Wildcats in June, following a suspension with pay, raised additional concerns about the university’s handling of the situation. Jon Hale of the Lexington Herald-Leader reported that Jorgensen received a $75,000 financial settlement as part of his departure from the university.

In response to the allegations outlined in the lawsuit, Jorgensen’s attorney, Greg Anderson, issued a statement vehemently denying the accusations on behalf of his client. Anderson suggested that Jorgensen was being targeted for his public support of former UK swimmer Riley Gaines, who was involved in a lawsuit against the NCAA over its policies toward transgender athletes.

The unfolding saga surrounding Jorgensen’s alleged misconduct and the University of Kentucky’s response has sent shockwaves through the sports community and beyond. As the investigation into these allegations continues, stakeholders are left grappling with questions about accountability, transparency, and the safety of student-athletes.

Henderson Newspaper will continue to closely monitor this evolving story and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Summary:

The University of Kentucky finds itself at the center of controversy following allegations of sexual assault against former swimming and diving coach Lars Jorgensen. These allegations, brought to light in a lawsuit filed by two former members of the Wildcats swimming and diving team, paint a disturbing picture of a culture of complicity and indifference within the university.

According to the lawsuit, the athletes allege that the university turned a blind eye to Jorgensen’s alleged misconduct, allowing him to create a toxic and sexually hostile environment within the swim program. The allegations include instances of sexual harassment, assault, and even violent rape against young female coaches and collegiate athletes under Jorgensen’s supervision.

The university’s response to the allegations has drawn scrutiny, particularly concerning its handling of previous reports and concerns about Jorgensen’s behavior. Despite reassurances from spokeswoman Kristi Willett that the university takes allegations of harm, harassment, and abuse seriously, questions remain about the institution’s awareness of and response to the allegations.

Instances of alleged misconduct by Jorgensen date back several years, with reports reaching university administrators directly on multiple occasions. Despite these reports, Jorgensen was hired as an associate head coach at Kentucky, raising concerns about the university’s vetting process and commitment to student safety.

The controversy surrounding Jorgensen’s alleged misconduct has raised broader questions about accountability and transparency within collegiate athletics. As investigations into the allegations continue, stakeholders are left grappling with the implications for athlete safety and the university’s reputation.

Conclusion:

The allegations against former University of Kentucky swimming and diving coach Lars Jorgensen represent a sobering reminder of the challenges faced in ensuring the safety and well-being of student-athletes. The disturbing nature of the allegations and the university’s response—or lack thereof—underscore the need for greater accountability and transparency within collegiate athletics.

While the legal process will ultimately determine the veracity of the allegations against Jorgensen, the broader conversation sparked by this controversy must not be ignored. Institutions of higher education have a duty to prioritize the safety and welfare of their students, particularly those who participate in athletic programs.

As investigations into the allegations against Jorgensen continue, it is imperative that the University of Kentucky and other institutions take proactive steps to address concerns about athlete safety and institutional accountability. Only through transparent and decisive action can universities rebuild trust and ensure the well-being of their student-athletes now and in the future.

As the situation unfolds, the Henderson Newspaper remains dedicated to providing updates and insights into this developing story. Stay tuned for further coverage as more information becomes available.

Interested food truck and trailer operators must apply in person for the lottery by noon on Oct. 20, at the Las Vegas Parking Services Office located at 350 S. City Parkway. The lottery will be held at the same location Oct. 25 at 9 a.m., and food trucks will be able to choose the date and spot that they want to operate in over the next six months.

Available locations for First Fridays include:

  • 1401 S. Commerce St.;
  • 1319 S. Commerce St.;
  • 1221 S. Casino Center Blvd.; and

The pilot program is the result of the city of Las Vegas staff meeting with businesses in the Arts District and the 18B Board following concerns about illegal parking and use of private properties without consent. The city already has a successful food truck lottery in place for other parts of downtown Las Vegas.

The Oct. 25 lottery will be limited to those that have registered and companies currently licensed to operate mobile food vending trucks or trailers in the city of Las Vegas. There is a fee of $50 per application to enter the lottery.

Lottery winners will be able to use the space they choose on the First Friday of their choice from 6 to 10 p.m.

For more information about the Mobile Food Vendor Pilot Program, vendors may contact Parking Services via email at CLVFoodTruck@LasVegasNevada.GOV or by phone at 702.229.4700.
